Diversity Statement

New Century College is an intentionally inclusive community that celebrates diversity and strives to have faculty, staff and students that reflect the diversity of our plural society. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, class, linguistic background, religion, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, or physical ability.

Diversity Committee Presents

Moments of Truth: Democratic Education

What is the role of higher education in promoting participatory democracy and social justice?

Featured Speaker: bell hooks

bell hooks is one of the most widely published black feminist scholars in the U.S. An outspoken cultural critic, educational theorist and professor of English, she is noted for her analyses of the politics of race, gender, class and culture. Her pseudonym, her great-grandmother's name, celebrates female legacies and is in lower case because "it is the substance of my books, not who is writing them, that is important."

To prepare for hooks’ visit, the Mason community is invited to read a chapter entitled “Democratic Education” from her book, Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope. Copies are on reserve at the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement (Enterprise 441), the Center for Teaching Excellence (JC 241), the Paul Robeson Room (JC 249 C) , and the Women’s Center (JC 240K).

Brought to you by the New Century College Diversity Committee in Partnership with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Programs (Bachelor of Individualized Study, Cultural Studies Program, Higher Education Program, Honors Program, Mason Topics, Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, New Century College), African-American Studies, Communication Department, Center for Teaching Excellence, Cultural Studies Graduate Student Association, Democracy Project, Multicultural Research and Resource Center, University Life and Women & Gender Studies

Mission Statement:

The NCC Diversity Affairs Committee strives to accomplish the following goals:
To assist and encourage NCC in the recruitment of a diverse faculty and undergraduate student population;
To support the diversity of the NCC curriculum;
To provide information to NCC concerning diversity resources and events at George Mason University and in the local community.

The committee is charged with helping to create an environment where diversity is celebrated; where faculty, staff and students are reminded of the importance of diversity; and where we remind each other of the subtle and unconscious ways we all discriminate on the basis of race, class, linguistic background, religion, gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, age, or physical ability.
